Local Rotary Clubs Band Together for “Make A Difference Day”

October 26, 2012 — Lansing, Mich. —Six Lansing-area Rotary clubs are working together to help feed those in need in honor of “Make A Difference Day” on Saturday, October 27.  The six local Rotary clubs—Downtown Lansing, Delta/Waverly, East Lansing, Haslett/Okemos, Mason and Williamston—are collecting non-perishable food items during their weekly meetings, with all items going to local food banks in the coming days.

“Rotary’s motto has always been ‘Service Above Self,’ said Lansing Rotary president Suzy Carter.  “We felt that if we all got together, encouraged our collective members to contribute as individuals — and to hold food drives at their places of business — we could all really make a difference.”

“People are relying on the Food Bank for help as much as ever,” said Joe Wald, president of the Greater Lansing Food Bank and Lansing Rotary Club member.  “Support from local service clubs through initiatives like this not only helps fill our pantry, it also raises awareness of the continuing need in our community.”

Five of the local clubs — Downtown Lansing, East Lansing, Delta/Waverly, Haslett/Okemos and Mason

— are donating to the Greater Lansing Food Bank.  Williamston Rotary is to The Williamston Food Bank.

This isn’t the first time Rotary has made a difference for local food banks.  The Williamston club recently awarded a grant to its local Food Bank for the purchase of a new freezer and dehumidifier, and in recent years Lansing Rotary donated $15,000 to the Greater Lansing Food Bank for the purchase of a food delivery truck.

Make A Difference Day was founded in 1992 by the HandsOn Network in association with USA WEEKEND magazine, and is that nation’s single largest day of community service.

All six local Rotary Clubs are part of Rotary International, the world’s oldest service club organization, comprised of more than 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries. Rotarians form a global network of 1.2 million members.  The Rotary Club of Lansing Foundation provides grant support to both local and international causes consistent with the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.”
